FLOORBALL Finland won the World Floorball Championship that ended in Prague Nov. 14. In the thrilling final game, Finland beat rival Sweden 7-6 in overtime. The Swedes, who had won all of the previous six championships, came back from being down 4-0 after the first period to take a 6-4 lead in the third period. The Finns equalized four minutes before the end of regulation. In the third place game, the Czech team lost to Switzerland 5-4 in overtime.

RETURN Hockey forward Radim Vrbata has made an unexpected move from the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning to the Czech Extraliga’s HC Mladá Boleslav. The 27-year-old Vrbata joined Tampa from Phoenix last summer and signed a three-year contract worth $9 million (178.8 million Kč). However, Vrbata had a disappointing campaign in Tampa and so decided to move back to his homeland. His contract with Tampa has been indefinitely suspended.
BOXER Professional boxer Rudolf Kraj said he has received an offer to fight for the European Championship title and so will not end his career in the immediate future. Kraj lost his contract with Germany’s team SpotLight after losing the WBC World Championship fight against Italy’s Giaccobe Fragomeni in late October. The 31-year-old said then he was seriously considering an end to his career.
TRANSFER The Czech national soccer team’s defender Michal Kadlec will not return to Sparta Praha from Germany, where he played on loan at Bayer Leverkusen during the fall season. Sparta cashed 20 million Kč for lending Kadlec to Leverkusen, and the club is expected to receive an additional 70 million Kč for the transfer.

BASKETBALL Czech men’s basketball champion ČEZ Nymburk lost to Spain’s Bilbao 92-79 in Nov. 9’s Eurocup game in Nymburk. ČEZ Nymburk recorded one win and two losses in the Eurocup and was ranked last in its four-member group after three rounds.
EURO LEAGUE Czech women’s basketball champion Gambrinus Sika Brno beat Latvia’s Riga 83-76 in Brno Dec. 10 and so qualified for the Euroclub playoffs. Another Czech club in the League, USK Prague, still has a chance to advance to the playoffs, despite suffering a disastrous 103-57 loss to Ekaterinburg in Russia. USK had to beat Polish squad Gdynia Nov. 17 in order to qualify for a further round.
SPONSOR Ceramic tiles manufacturer Lasselsberger announced it would, after 14 years, withdraw sponsorship from Extraliga hockey club HC Plzeň. The company’s general manager, Roman Blažíček, said the global financial crisis and its negative impact on the economy was the main factor in Lasselsberger’s decision.
SOCCER
Jaroslav Vacek, vice president of the Czech Football Association (ČMFS), speculates that some 10 percent of the country’s 4,000 soccer clubs could disappear as a result of the global financial crisis. Vacek also says first and second division clubs may have to learn to operate on significantly smaller budgets.
