KLAUS Almost three-quarters of Czechs think President Václav Klaus should not be allowed to present his personal opinions abroad, according to a poll published by the daily Právo Nov. 18. More than half of the population thinks that he is damaging the Czech image abroad.VISAS The Czech Republic joined the U.S. Visa Waiver Program Nov. 17, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported. Unlike other EU citizens in the program, who only have to fill out a landing card, Czechs must request electronic authorization prior to traveling. Among the first tourists to use the new system were Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Vondra and Interior Minister Ivan Langer.MURDER A Czech has been arrested in Mexico for murdering his wife, iDnes.cz reported Nov. 17. His wife flew to Mexico to ask for a divorce in August. Instead of filling out the paperwork, he beat her to death, cut up the body and stashed it in several suitcases in a forest. Despite initial denial, he eventually led police to the body and faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted. OPPOSITION The opposition Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) is creating regional governments. Despite forming coalitions with the communist party, its popularity is on the rise, Právo reported Nov. 18. If national elections were held right now, polls show that the ČSSD would claim an overwhelming victory.
